What is the most common primary cause of hypothyrodism
lymphocytic thyroiditis
What breeds is genetically predisposed to hypothyroidism
Boxer, Giant Schnauzer
Signs of congenital hypothyroidism
Dysproportionate dwarfism
Cretinism
Hypothyroidism
What breeds is genetically predisposed to primary adult hypothyrodism
Golden retriever, Labrador retriever, Doberman, Boxer
Euthyroid sick syndrome
condition in which serum levels of thyroid hormones are low in patients who have nonthyroidal systemic illness but who are actually euthyroid
Difference between sick euthyroid syndrome vs hypothyrodism
Patients with sick-euthyroid syndrome typically manifest a normal (or even high) free T4 by equilibrium dialysis and a high rT3 level, while patients with true central hypothyroidism manifest a low free T4 by equilibriium dialysis and a normal (or low) rT3 level.
What levels of T4 and TSH would you use to diagnose a dog with hypothyrodism
low T4 + high TSH
Most common clinical signs of hypothyrodism
lethargy, weight gain, alopecia, pyoderma, seborrhoea
Not so common clinical signs of hypothyrodism
Neuromuscular disorders, female infertility, myxoedema, ocular disorders, congenital disease
Diagnosis for hypothyrodism
Diagnosis by exclusion
Clinical pathology
Assays for thyroid hormones
TSH stimulation
TRH stimulation
Assay for TSH
Assays for anti-thyroid antibodies
How to differentiate between cushing disease and hypothyrodism
ACTH and Low Dose Dexamethasone Suppression Test (LDDST). If there is high level of cortisol after ACTH it is cushing, normal level of cortisol after LDDST then cushing
Therapy for hypothyoidism
sodium levothyroxine
What is the level of Total T4 to diagnose Hypothyrodism
0-14 nmol/l
