hypothyroidism Flashcards
1
Q
hypothyroidism pathophysiology
A
- inadequate production of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) by the thyroid gland*
PATHO:
primary:Hashimotto’s disease (most common cause, autoimmune issue) , thyroidectomy, or radiation therapy causes thyroid gland injury/damage, leading to less T3/T4 production
secondary: anterior pituitary gland tumor causes less TSH secretion (which lesss T3/T4 production).
tertiary: hypothalamic dysfunction causes less TRH secretion (which decreases TSH secretion and Decreases T3/T4 production
2
Q
hypothyroidism signs and symptoms
A
hypotension,** bradycardia**,lethargy, cold intolerance, constipation, weight gain, hair loss, brittle fingernails, depresion, cold/dry skin, pallor
3
Q
Labs/ diagnosis for hypothyroidism
A
Decrease T3/T4
increase TSH(with primary hopthyroidism), decrease TSH( with secondary/tertiary), anemia
4
Q
treatment for hypothyroidism
A
levothyroxine
liothyronine
5
Q
nursing care for hypothyroidism
A
- encourage frequent rest periods
