hypothyroidism pathophysiology

A
  • inadequate production of thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) by the thyroid gland*
    PATHO:
    primary:Hashimotto’s disease (most common cause, autoimmune issue) , thyroidectomy, or radiation therapy causes thyroid gland injury/damage, leading to less T3/T4 production
    secondary: anterior pituitary gland tumor causes less TSH secretion (which lesss T3/T4 production).
    tertiary: hypothalamic dysfunction causes less TRH secretion (which decreases TSH secretion and Decreases T3/T4 production

A
  • encourage frequent rest periods
  • encourage a low-calorie/high-fiber diet to promote weight loss and prevent constipation.
