An endocrine disorder when the thyroid gland produces too little T3/T4

Symptoms of hypothyroidism?
A
General symptoms – tired
CVS – cold intolerance
Abdo – weight gain, reduced appetite, constipation
GU – menorrhagia

Signs of hypothyroidism?
A
Smooth goitre Peaches + cream complexion Dry skin/hair Bradycardia Slow relaxing reflexes

Investigations for hypothyroidism?
A
Thyroid function tests
Thyroid antibodies - to exclude autoimmune aetiology
US thyroid and fine needle aspiration - cytology to differentiate malignant nodules
X-ray - to check for tracheal compression and retrograde extension
Thyroid scan - to distinguish between hot and cold nodules

Treat cause
Levothyroxine
