Hypothesis Flashcards
What is a directional hypothesis
A hypothesis where there is a stated correlation between the IV and DV in either a negative or positive manner.
What is a non-directional hypothesis
A hypothesis where the outcome between the IV and DV are not stated, an unpredicted relationship between the two; not stating whether or not it is a positive/negative correlation
When would a directional hypothesis be used
When there is prior research done on the topic.
When would a non-directional hypothesis be used
When there is no prior research done on the topic
What is a null hypothesis
A hypothesis that states there will be no difference between the results, where the IV does not effect the DV. It must be stated that if there is an effect, then it is due to chance
“Temperature will not have an effect on aggression levels, any change is down to chance” This is an example of what type of hypothesis
Null hypothesis as it states that there is no correlation between the IV and DV, and any result is due to chance.
“There is a difference in the exam results between those who revise a lot and those who do not revise” This is an example of what type of hypothesis
Non-directional hypothesis as it does not state the correlation between IV and DV
“Boys are more helpful than girls” This is an example of what type of hypothesis
Directional hypothesis as it states the correlation between the IV and the DV
