Experimental Design Flashcards
Independent measures design is:
In an experiment with 2 conditions, participants will only take part in one condition of the experiment.
Repeated measures design is:
Participants take part in both conditions of the experiment where there is only 1 group
Matched pairs design is:
Participants are matched in each condition for characteristics that may have an effect on their performance. eg. IQ may have an effect on results and performance, thus higher and lower are matched and placed in 2 separate conditions.
Strengths of independent measures
Time efficient, less order effects, less prone to demand characteristics
weaknesses of independant measures
Participant variables
Strengths of repeated measures
Participant variables are reduced due to the same pool of people being used, fewer people need to participate so it saves time
Weaknesses of repeated measures
Order effects, demand characteristics
Strengths of matched pairs
Reduced participant variables, less order effects, more accurate results
Weaknesses of matched pairs
Time consuming, extremely inconvenient, matches are never perfect
