Hypotheses Flashcards
What is a hypotheses
A prediction
Needs to precise and testable statement
Must be operationalised (measurable )
Must include the IV and DV
May be directional ,non-directional or null hypothesis
What are the 3 types of hypothesis
Directional
Non-directional
Null hypothesis
What is a directional hypothesis ?
A hypothesis that states that there will be a difference between the different control groups and that one will perform better/worse than the other
What is an example of a directional hypothesis
The memory recall of words will be higher for the 18-24 year olds compared to the 30-54 year olds
What is a non-directional hypothesis
A hypothesis that states that there will be a difference between groups/controls but it does not state what the difference will be
What is an example of a non directional hypothesis
There will be a difference between the memory recall of words for 18-24 year olds and 30-54 year old
What are the directional and non directional hypothesis known as
The alternative hypothesis
What is a null hypothesis
A hypothesis that states that there will be no difference between the groups/controls
What hypothesis will be taken if the scenario in an exam questions outline previous research
Directional hypothesis
What hypothesis will be taken if it doesn’t state a previous research
Non directional hypothesis
