Q

Example of repeated measures

A

If we were investigating the effect of organisation on memory , the PP would take part in both the organised and unorganised condition

Q

What is independent groups design

A

The PPs takes part in one condition
This means that each experimental condition has a different set of PPs

Q

What is an example of independent groups design

A

A set of PPs for the organised memory condition is compared to a set of PPs in the disorganised condition e.g zimbardo

Q

What is matched pairs design pt2

A

However PPs are matched as closely as possible on key variables ; age ,gender, personality
One person from each pair is randomly assigned to the different conditions in the study and results are compared

Q

What are limitations of repeated measures

A

-Order effects PPs so they may do better in the second condition due to practice in the first
-PPs may guess the aims and therefore act differently in the second condition

Q

What are limitations of independent groups

A

-cannot control PPs variables e.g condition A PPs may have higher IQ than those in condition B ,which may impact results rather than the change than the change in IV
-Requires lots of PPs

Q

What are limitations of matched pairs design

A

-time consuming to match PPs
-nit possible to control all the variables and match them all, unless MZ twins are used and there are too few in the wold compared to the norm population

Q

How can you overcome the limitations of repeated measures

A

Counterbalance PPs-half of the PPs do condition A followed by condition B . The other half complete condition B followed by condition A

Q

How can you overcome the limitations of independent groups

A

Randomly allocate PPs to conditions so in theory PPs variables should be distributed evenly across conditions

Q

How can you overcome the limitations of matched pair design

A

-restrict the number of key variables
-conduct a pilot study to consider which key variables are required
