Hypotheses Flashcards
What’s a hypothesis?
It’s a testable statement or prediction of the outcome of the research. It predicts the interaction between the IV and DV. There’s 2 types-
- Alternative or experimental
- Null Hypothesis
What’s are alternative/experimental hypothesis?
This is the hypothesis that predicts the effect of the IV on the DV, there’s 2 further subtypes-
- Directional
- Non directional
What’s a directional hypothesis?
It predicts the direction in which the results are expected to go (E.G. listening to loud noises decrease the number of words recalled from a list of 20 words).
Also known as one tailed hypothesis.
What’s a non-directional hypothesis?
It doesn’t state a direction but simply states that one factor will affect another, or that there will be a difference between 2 sets of scores without saying which direction that difference will be. (E.G. listening to loud noise will affect the number of words recalled from a list of 20 words).
Also known as two tailed hypothesis.
What’s a null hypothesis?
It’s a statement of no affect (E.G. listening to loud noise will have no effect on the number of words recalled from a list of 20 words).
