Hyponatremia Flashcards
1
Q
Hyponatremia
A
Low Na+, low sodium in blood
Water/fluid, brain/nervous
Helps regulate water outside the cell
Range is 135-145
- caused by osmosis- low to high concentration
- causes cell to swell, so sodium and water follow each other
2
Q
Hyponatremia
A
Common causes “no na”
- N: Na+ excretion increased with renal problems, NG suction, vomiting, diuretics,
- O: overload of fluids (CHF,hypotonic fluids,liver failure)
- N: Na+ intake low
- A: antidiuretic hormone over secreted- adrenal insufficiency
- syndrome of inappropriate of ADH: a condition in which high level of a hormone cause the body to retain water so too much water
3
Q
Hyponatremia s/s
A
“SALT LOSS”
- S: seizures
- A: abdominal cramping, attitude changes(confusion)
- L: Lethargy
- T: tendon reflexes
- L: loss of urine and appetite
- O: orthostatic hypertension, overactive bowel sounds
- S: shallow respirations
- S: spams of muscles
4
Q
Nursing interventions
A
- watch cardiac, respiratory, neuro, renal and GI
- monitor sodium level
- 3% saline-hypertonic, shrinks cells down because before cell was swollen
- increase oral sodium intake
