Hypernatremia Flashcards
1
Q
Hypernatremia
A
- 135-145
- too much sodium in extracellular
- caused by osmosis- low to high concentration
- cell shrinks/dehydration
2
Q
Hypernatremia
A
Causes: “HIGH SALT”
- H: hypercortisolism (crushing syndrome- overproduction of alderostone)
- I: increased sodium intake (oral/IV)
- G: GI feeding without adequate h20 supplement
- H: hypertonic solutions (ex 3% saline)
- S: sodium exertion decreased
- A: aldosterone problems
- L: loss of fluids- sweating, heat stroke
- T: thirst impairment- not thirsty

Q
S/s
A
“ no FRIED foods for you”
- F: fever, flushed skin
- R: restlessness, agitated
- I: increase fluid retention
- E: edema, confused
- D: decreased urine output, dry mouth/ mucous membrane

Q
Nursing interventions
A
- restrict sodium intake; bacon, butter, canned foods, processed foods, cheese, lunch meat
- patient safety: confused
- may order isotonic or hypotonic IV solution- give slowly (0.45% NS)
- educate about diet
