Hypoglycemia Flashcards
What are the types of non diabetic Hypoglycemia?
Ill or medicated: Drugs(EtOH) Critical illness(sepsis, organ fail) Hormone deficiency (cort, glucagon)
Seemingly well:
Endoginous hyperinsulin
Accidental, malicious hypogly
How does the body compensate to Hypoglycemia
SNS activation to free up glucose from glycogen storage and gluconeogenesis
What are the autonomic signs and symptoms of Hypoglycemia?
Autonomic: Sweating, Anxiety, Tachycardia
What are the Neuroglycopenic signs and symptoms of Hypoglycemia?
Mental status change, confusion, lack of concentration, abn behavior, blurry vision, coma
What disease processes can cause fasting hypoglycemia?
Islet cell tumor Liver Failure Tumors Hypercatabolic States Factitious Adrenal cortical insufficiency Prolonged alcohol consumption
What disease processes can cause post prandial hypoglycemia?
Post gastric resection Islet cell tumor Glycogen storage disease Hereditary fructose intolerance Galactosemia
WHat blood tests should be done to determine the cause of Hypoglycemia?
Glucose Insulin C-Peptide Beta-Hydroxybutyrate Proinsulin Sulfonyurea(increases insulin)
What does the C-Peptide tell you about a hypoglycemic patient?
High? Endoginous Insulin (can be caused by sulfonurea)
Low? Exogenous
What drug is used as a procacative test in Insulinoma?
Tolbutamide
How is Hypoglycemia Treated?
Oral Glucose if consious
IV GLucose 50% followed by IV drip dextrose 5% or 10%
Glucagon IV or SQ
