Hyperthermia, hypothermia and fever 8.9 Flashcards
risk factors for mortality
temp elevation, increased time to initiate cooling, high number of organ systems affected, presence of anuria, presence of coma, presence of CV failure

Heat Stroke management
establish airway, rapid cooling, endotrach intubation, ventilation, IV bolus of normal saline
Mild hypothermia
32-35 C
Moderate
28-32 C
Severe hypothermia
Mild hypothermia presentation
tachypnea, tachycardia, hyperventilation, ataxia, dysarthria, impaired judgement, shivering, cold diuresis
Moderate hypothermia presentation
reductions in pulse rate and cardiac output, hypoventilation, CNS depression, hyporeflexia, decreased renal blood flow, loss of shivering
Severe hypothermia presentation
pulmonary edema, oliguria, areflexia, coma, hypotension, bradycardia, arrythmia, asystole
Fever work-up in non-toxic child
Look for easily checked sources of fever, rapid testing for viruses, perform UA by bladder cath
