What is accelerated hypertension?
BP >180/110 with signs of papilloedema or hypertensive retinopathy
What are the stages of hypertension?
Stage 1: clinic reading >=140/90
Ambulatory BP >=135/85
Stage 2: clinic reading >= 160/100
Ambulatory BP >=150/95
Stage 3: clinic reading >=180 systolic or 110 diastolic
When should antihypertensive treatment be offered?
If stage 1 + co-morbidity (organ damage, est CV disease, renal disease, diabetes)
Any age with stage 2/3
To which hypertensive patients should statins be offered?
Patients with 10 year cardiovascular risk of >=20%
What are the management steps in hypertension?
Lifestyle advice
If 55y/o or black; step 1 = CCB
Step 2 = ACEi/ARB + CCB
Step 3 = ACEi/ARB + CCB + Thiazide diuretic
Step 4 (resistant HTN) = ACEi/ARB + CCB + Thiazide diuretic + consider other diuretic or alpha/beta-blocker

If >80y/o = <140/90
