Hyperglycemia medications Flashcards
Metoprolol succinate
Anti-anginal, antihypertensive beta blocker
-take apical pulse, hold if bpm less than 50
-blocks beta 1 receptors decreasing BP, HR, and frequency of angina attacks
-decreases mortality in pts with HF
15min//unknown//6-12hr
-Fatigue, weakness, bradycardia, heart failure, pulmonary edema ,erectile dysfunction
-monitor BP, vitals, Intake/output ratios, daily wt
-assess for signs of heart failure
Simvastatin
Lipid lowering agent
-slows progression of CAD and lowers high cholesterol (slightly raises HDL)
Unknown/1-2hr/unknown
-should be given in evening
-asthenia. Headache, abdominal pain, constipation, diarrhea, dyspepsia, flatulence, nausea, upper respiratory tract infection
-should be given in evening
-expect lowering of LDL and raising of HDL
Nitroglycerine
vasodilator
- for angina
- reduces cardiac oxygen demand and increases blood flow by dilating coronary arteries
- give at first signs of attack
- assess pain before and after administration.systolic over 100 and apical over 50
- monitor BP and other vitals, intensity and duration of drug response
- pt may have tingling and if so can hold dose in cheek
- headache, dizziness, syncope, weakness, orthostatic hypotension, tachycardia, flushing, palpitations, nausea, vomiting, cutaneous vasodilation, rash
Humulin R
need independent check while syringe is in bottle of sliding scale and draw up
antidiabetic hormone
-for hyperglycemia r/t DM
-lowers blood glucose by stimulating glucose uptake while inhibiting liver production of glucose. enhances protein synthesis
30-60min/2-4hr/5-7hr
-monitor blood glucose
-hypoglycemia and anaphylaxis
Potassium
Max rate of 10mEq/100mL
- max concentration of 10/100
- take BP and apical pulse (rate and rhythm)
- double check pump
