hypercalcemia Flashcards
1
Q
Causes of hypercalcemia
A
-hyperparathyroidism: too much PTH
(if serum calcium gets low PTH kicks in & pulls Ca from the bone &puts it in the blood so serum Ca increases)
-Thiazides( retain calcium)
-Immobilization
2
Q
s/s
A
- bones are brittle
- kidney stones (majority made of calcium)
3
Q
Treatment of hypercalcemia
A
- move
- fluids to prevent kidney stones
- phospo soda & fleet enema both hav phosphorous
- Calcium has inverse relationship w/phosporous (when u drive up phos, calcium goes down)
- steroids:decrease calcium
- Add phosporous/protein rich items to diet
- Safety precautions: PT IS SEDATED W/ HYPERCALCEMIA
- must hav vitamin D to use Ca 1000 units per day
- Calcitonin to decrease serum Ca drive calcium back into the bone
