What is the function and location of the hyoid apparatus?
Function = attachment structure for the tongue, and for muscles in the floor of the oral cavity.
Location = Found in the larynx, between the pharynx and the trachea.
Is the epiglottis made from paired or unpaired cartilage?
Unpaired
What is the larynx made up of?
9 cartilages - 6 paired, 3 unpaired. Provides rigidity and stability.
What are the 5 muscles of the larynx?
1) Cricothyroid muscles
2) Cricoarytenoideus dorsalis
3) Cricoarytenoideus lateralis
4) Thyroarytenoideus
5) Vocalis
What are teeth and what is their function?
Hard resistant structures in or on jaws of vertebrates.
Used for catching, masticating food, defense, other specialised purposes.
What is heterodonty?
Where teeth differentiate into incisors, canines and molars
What is homodonty?
Teeth of similar form (e.g., porpoise, dolphin)
What is a dental formula?
The number of each type of tooth (ICPM) in each quadrant of the mouth.
Where do teeth lie in the jaw?
Lie in socket in jaw bone called the alveolus
What are the main layers of tooth?
Enamel (outer) = hardest substance in body
Dentin = main supporting structure of tooth
Pulp
Cementum = Covers root, attaches to periodontal ligament
