Name three safety measures to prevent hazards.
Wash your hands before you start cooking
Have a clean and tidy work area
Make sure all wires and cables are tucked away
Don’t leave hob or oven on longer than necessary
Pets or animals should not be in the kitchen while cooking
Why do we wash our hands before cooking?
To prevent food poisoning bacteria cross contaminating food.
Why do we remove all jewellery and nail varnish?
So that it doesn’t conduct the heat from the hob/oven.
Why do we tie long hair back?
So that there are no hairs in the food.
Why do we cover all cuts with a blue, waterproof plaster?
So that it doesn’t contaminate the food and so that the cuts don’t get irritated or infected.
Why do we avoid cooking while we are sick?
So that bad germs do not contaminate the food.
Why do we carry knives by our side?
So that you don’t accidentally hurt anyone while walking.
Why do we not leave knives in the washing up bowl?
So that you don’t accidentally stab yourself when going to do the washing up.
Why do we use a wooden spoon instead of a metal spoon when we cook?
So that the spoon doesn’t get too hot when it’s in hot food.
Why do we use oven gloves instead of a tea towel when removing food from the oven?
Oven gloves are thick and made for the oven whereas a tea towel is thin and you are more likely to burn yourself.
Why don’t we put electric appliances near water?
The water could electrocute you if it comes into contact with an electrical device.
