Hydrosphere Flashcards
Explain in detail with the aid of an annotated diagram the formation of a Waterfall.
Hydraulic action is when air is compressed into the river banks causing the material to weaken. Abrasion is when the force of water throws a bedload against the banks causing erosion. Attrition is when rocks are ground down by friction from wave action to small sand particles. The solution is soluble rock reacting to acid in water. Soft rock eroded and causes undercutting this causes an overhang of hard rock it remains unsupported and collapses. It creates a plunge pull and the waterfall retreats upstream forming a gorge.
Explain in detail with the aid of an annotated diagram the formation of a Meander.
Form due to a variety of processes such as hydraulic action the pounding waves compress trapped air in rocks creating a blast weakening the rock.
Abrasion rocks are thrown against headland creating a sandblasting action wherein away rocks. Attrition rocks are slowly being ground down by friction from wave action to fine sand particles. Solution is sulluble rock reacting to acid in water. They flow fast on the outside bend increasing erosive power causing lateral erosion of the riverbank and the meander expands and a river cliff forms
Explain in detail with the aid of an annotated diagram the formation of an Ox-Bow Lake.
Explain in detail the Global Hydrological Cycle.
Explain in detail the Drainage Basin System and refer to the inputs, storage, and outputs of the system.
Describe the structure and change of a Hydrograph.
Suggests the reason as to why the river in question has behaved in the way it has?
