Hydrocarbons - Alkanes Flashcards
What are hydrocarbons used for?
Petrol, diesel, lots of plastics
What is a hydrocarbon?
A compound of carbon and hydrogen atoms - alkanes
How are hydrocarbons held together?
Covalent bonds - share electrons, very strong
Each atom makes enough covalent bonds to fill it’s outer shell, eg hydrogen needs 2, carbon 4 etc
The simplest type of hydrocarbon is an?
Alkane - chains of carbon atoms with 2 hydrogen atoms attached to each one and 3 at the ends.
Alkanes are saturated compounds, what foes this mean?
Contain single covalent bonds, can’t open up and join other things.
How can you test between alkanes and alkenes?
Alkane won’t discolour in bromine water
What are the first 4 alkanes?
Methane, ethane, propane, butane
What is the formula for all alkanes?
CnH2n+ 2
