How do properties change as hydrocarbon chains get longer?
A
Boiling point increases Less flammable More viscous (flows less easily) Less volatile (doesn't evaporate as easily)

Explain changes that happen to molecules when crude oil is heated
A
Heat gives energy
Molecules move and eventually overcome intermolecular forces joining it to other molecules
Whizz off as a gas - small molecules first
Big molecules have higher boiling points - more bonds to break up!
