Hydro-electricity, Waves And Tides Flashcards
What is hydro electric power
Name 3 good things and 3 bad things
Requires flooding of a valley by building a big dam, water is allowed out through turbines
No pollution
Immediate response to increase in demand
Reliable
Initial costs are high
Damage environment as flooding can lead to loss of habitat
Looks unpleasant when they dry up
What is wave power
Name 3 good things and 3 bad things
Small wave powered turbines located around the coast, connected to a generator
No pollution
No fuel costs or running costs
Useful because it’s small scale
Disturbing habitats
Spoiling the view
Unreliable because waves die when the wind drops
What are tidal barrages
Name 3 good things and 3 bad things
Building a tidal barrage to generate electricity
As tide comes in it fills up the estuary, the water is then allowed out through turbines at control speed
Produced by gravitational pull of the sun and moon
No pollution
Reliable (2x a day)
No fuel or running costs
Preventing access to boats
Spoiling view
Changing the habitat
Height of the tide changes so less energy
