Q

What is dissipated energy sometimes called and why

A

Wasted energy

because the energy is being stored in a way that’s not useful

Q

Example of energy being dissipated

A

A mobile phone is a system
Energy is usefully transferred from the chemical energy store of the battery, some of this is dissipated to the thermal energy store

Q

Give an example of energy transfer for closed systems

A

A cold spoon dropped into an insulated flask of hot soup, which is sealed - closed system
Energy is transferred from the thermal energy store of the soup to the useless thermal energy store of the spoon
No energy has left the system so the net change in energy is ZERO
