Hydraulic Bursts Flashcards
Initial actions of the Attack party leader ?
- perform a fire risk assessment
- Report to DCHQ the location and any actions carried out to isolate the burst.
- Report any other hazards caused by the burst
What needs to be done before using a dry powder extinguisher ? And why ?
- Don EBS prior to operating dry powder.
- Dry powder can damage human respiratory system.
Initial actions if you find a hydraulic burst ?
- raise the alarm by quickest means possible.
- Don an EBS mask
- Attempt to contain the mist with dry powder extinguisher.
- Attempt to shut the supply vv to the burst.
Indications of a hydraulic burst ?
- fine high pressured mist or pool of fluid.
- Loud hissing noise that reduces as replenishment tank empties.
- Smell is not easily identifiable due to atmospheric mix of oils onboard.
- Slightly tangy taste if you were to walk into mist.
- Rep tank level and plant pressure indications on PMS start to drop.
If snorting or venting in event of a hydraulic burst the SCOOW will ?
Make a pipe stating “Stop snorting/ ventilating.”
When the SCOOW pipes “stop snorting and ventilating” it is an order for the ships company to ?
Shut all hull vvs, lower masts and stop any trimming ops.
This allows all systems to be operated and put into normal state mode prior to hydraulic isolations being made.
Initial actions of the SCOOW will be to order the planesman ?
A depth to keep- to minimise planes and rudder movements to reduce hydraulic use.
Another initial action of the SCOOW in a hydraulic burst is to inform MR when rudder and planes are ?
At minimum angles - MR to isolate system from plant using fire isolation vvs
SCOOW initial actions in a hydraulic burst is to order the SCCO to open ?
WS 623 supply to the aft centre fed hose reels, ensure low gain mode has been selected.
In a loss of hydraulics what systems may need to be operated by hand ?
Hydroplanes and steering
Weapon handling
Masts
Mast shutters
System vvs
Blow vvs
How many actuators does each of the aft control surfaces have ?
Port aft plane : one actuator
Stbd aft plane : one actuator
Rudder : two actuators (work in tandem)
How many actuators does each the fwd control surfaces have ?
Fwd planes : one actuator for both port & stbd sides.
What is the preferred normal mode for submarine control ?
Auto mode.
What are the three gain modes of operation in the PMS control ?
High gain
Normal gain
Low gain
What situation would high gain be used in ?
Used in emergency situations when there has been a control surface failure
