Hydraulic Flashcards
What is not a function of a valve?
To receive hydraulic pressure and convert it into mechanical energy / action. (That is the function of an actuator)
What are the advantages of hydraulic power?
- Mechanical leveraging
- High power-to-weight ratio
- Flexibility in the way power transmission lines can be routed
- Ease of regulation of hydraulic power, hence control
What is the purpose of an accumulator?
It absorbs pressure surges and stores hydraulic energy for emergency power or when engine power is not available.
What is a disadvantage of hydraulic power?
It requires more maintenance / is complex to maintain.
What is Pascal’s Law?
The pressure exerted anywhere in a confined incompressible fluid is transmitted throughout the fluid such that the same change occurs everywhere.
What is not a function of a reservoir?
Pumping hydraulic fluid in the system.
What is Bernoulli’s Theorem?
It states that as the speed of an inviscid (negligible viscosity) fluid increases, its static pressure decreases.
What is the main purpose of a hydraulic system?
It acts as a force multiplier to actuate control surfaces.
What is not a property of hydraulic fluid?
Compressibility, no fluidity, low flashpoint.
