Air Fuel Systems Flashcards
Fuel can be fed via?
Pressure or Gravity. Save for light high wing aircraft, most aircraft utilised a Pressure Feed Fuel System.
How is fuel measured?
Using a Float, or via Capacitance.
The purpose of the Fuel Boost Pump is?
To provide constant fuel to the engine at the right pressure to prevent aeration and cavitation at high altitudes.
The Fuel Vent System is crucial during fuel transfer and fuel consumption as?
It allows air to be displaced during refuelling or fuel transfer to be vented overboard, and for air to enter the tanks to when fuel is used, preventing damage to the tanks.
What are the refuelling methods? (2)
Probe & Drogue - Can refuel multiple A/C simultaneously
Boom & Receptacle - Shorter tanking time and mechanically simpler
Types of Fuel Storage Systems
internal (4)
external (3)
Rigid Removable - easily removed for inspection, replacement or repair
Bladder / Bag Tank / Fuel Cell - easy to insert into aircraft
Integral - reduces weight due to usage of the existing structure of the aircraft
Self-Sealing Fuel Tanks - during puncture, one layer swells to seal the hole
External
Drop Tank/External Tank - Jettisoned for combat or emergency; increases drag, use of pylon space
Tip Tank - counteracts wing bending loads, reduced fatigue loading
Conformal Fuel Tank (CFT) - Less drag as compared to an external tank
What is not part of the fuel system?
Use logic.
