Hydration Flashcards
What are some symptoms of hyponatremia? (5)
- Bloating
- Vomiting
- Nausea
- Headache
- Brain swelling (Cerebral Edema)
What is pre-hydration? (1)
Pre-hydration is when an athlete drinks fluid/water just before a sporting event.
What is exercise hyponatremia? (3)
- The result of drinking too much fluid.
- Not drinking sodium.
- Or both.
How much fluid does a sedentary person eliminate as urine? (1)
Approximately 1,500ml as urine.
How long can a person survive without water? (1)
A person cannot survive for more than 3 or 4 days without water.
How does exercise affect the body’s ability to control temperature? (3)
The body’s ability to control temperature, increasing fluid loss and affecting thermoregulation.
Is thermoregulation a voluntary or involuntary function and why? (2)
Thermoregulation is an involuntary function; we do not have control over what happens inside our bodies.
Why is thermoregulation important for the body? (1)
The body needs to maintain a certain temperature for all internal organs to work efficiently.
What does ‘regulation’ refer to in the context of the body? (1)
Refers to keeping control within the body systems.
What does ‘thermo’ relate to? (1)
Relates to temperature.
What is thermoregulation? (2)
Thermoregulation is the way in which the body maintains a consistent internal temperature despite changes in external temperatures caused by the environment.
What is dehydration? (1)
Dehydration is a condition that occurs when we are losing more fluids than we are taking in.
What is hydration? (1)
Hydration is the process of providing a suitable amount of liquid to bodily tissues.
