Hybridization and Bonding Flashcards
What is a covalent bond?
a shared pair of electrons exists between two atoms
What is the definition of hybrization?
when orbitals mix to form new orbitals
What are ionic bonds?
the attractive interaction between oppositely charged ions.
What does hydrogen bonding require?
an electronegative atom (O,N,F) to be attached to a hydrogen atom. The dipole produced can interact with another electronegative atom to form a hydrogen bond.
How strong is a hydrogen bond?
1/10 of the strength of a covalent bond
What is Valence Bond Theory?
that bonds form when the valence orbitals on one atom overlap with the valence oribitals on another atom
Which is weaker, intermolecular or intramolecular forces?
Intermolecular (the ones between molecules) are not as strong as the intramolecular forces holding individual molecules together.
