Chromosome Structure Flashcards
Where are these 3 centromeres positioned?
- Acrocentric
- Telocentric
- Metacentric
- Near the end
- At the very end
- Near the middle
What is the definition of a centromere?
The region at which two sister chromatids are joined. It can be seen as a visible constriction along the length of the chromosome.
Explain ‘Kinetochores’
They form during prophase on either side of the centromere. They capture the positive ends of the spindles, connecting them to the chromosomes.
What is chromatin
an association between chromosomal dna and some specific proteins
What are some of the functions of the proteins in chromatin?
- packaging and protecting the dna
- dna replication
- facilitating gene expression
Explain Heterochromatin
It is highly condensed and inactive in gene expression, consisting of almost exclusively repetitive dna sequences
What is the definition of a chromosome?
components of living cells that carry genetic information in the form of dna
