Cell Division Flashcards
1
Q
Name 4 things that cell division is important in
A
Development, Growth, Repair and Maintenance and Asexual Reproduction
2
Q
What happens before a cell divides?
A
- Growth, cell doubles in size and duplicate organelles
- DNA Replication, all chromosomes
- Segregation, chromosomes are segregated into two complete sets.
3
Q
What happens during Interphase?
A
G1 = cells double in size S = a single round of dna replication is completed G2 = organelles duplicate
4
Q
What happens during mitosis?
A
Segregation of two sister chromatids to make two sets of identical chromosomes.
5
Q
What is cell apoptosis?
A
Programmed cell death
6
Q
Explain ‘prophase’
A
chromatin is condensing and the chromosomes become visible. The nuclear envelope also breaks down.
7
Q
Explain ‘metaphase’
A
chromosomes line up on the equator
8
Q
Explain ‘anaphase’
A
sister chromatids segregate to opposite poles of the cell, they are now single chromatid chromosomes
