Mare

Gelding

Weanling
A young equid between 6 months - 1 year old
Yearling
An equid between the age of 1-2 years old
Long yearling
An equid that is between 1-2 years old but is closer to 2 years old

A male equid under 3 years old (altered and unaltered)
Hand
The unit of measurement in which you measure equids
Horse
An equid that will be taller than 14.2 hands
Pony
An equid that will be 14.2 hands or shorter when fully grown
Grade
An equid that is not registered with a breed association
Draft
Classification of several equine breeds that were originally developed to haul wagons. They are among the tallest horse breeds and average over 16 hands
Gait
Collective term for the various speeds of a horse, takes into consideration not only the speed of the horse but in which ways the legs are moving and in which combination they move
Walk
4 beat gait, each foot moves forward separately
Jog
2 beat gait, not a walk but slower than the true trot
Pace
2 beat gait, both legs on the same side move concurrently at the same time
Trot
2 beat gait, bouncy forward movement
Canter
3 beat gait, “running speed”
Lope
Term given to a canter in western-type riding. Similar to a canter but much slower and exaggerated
Gallop
4 beat gait, much smoother than a canter, but much smoother.
