-population of New Orleans fell from 1.4 million to 1 million between 2005-6
-2400 businesses were closed down
-hundreds of thousands became homeless
-Estimated total damage=125billion
Immediate responses
-1.7 million people were evacuated from Mississippi and Louisiana
-35,000 people were rescued by the coastguard in New Orleans
-charities provided food water and aid
-national guard deployed
Long-term responses
-Waters that flooded New Orleans were pumped into Lake Pontchartrain
-US Congress allocated $62 billion to be spent in aid
-20 Billion spent rebuilding New Orleans flood defence systems
