Steep relief
-Boscastle is in a very steep valley, which means surface runoff is high and fast
-steep valley acted like a funnel channeling all of the rain in to boscastle

Low bridge in Boscastle
-Bridge over the river valency in Boscastle was not tall and had a low arch
-when the flood came cars and debris became stuck under the arch creating a dam, this lead to worse flooding
Lack of flood defences
-Boscastle had no flood defences
When did the flood happen

Effect-decreased tourism
-Flood happened during the peak season for tourism
-flood cost town 50 million in damage and lost income
Effect- environmental pollution
-150 cars transported into the sea
-1850 tones of flood debris was recovered from the surrounding area

-58 properties flooded, 4 destroyed
-150 cars swept away
-roads and bridges destroyed
Evacuation
-RAF flew people out
-7 helicopters were used
-120 people rescued in 7 hours

-river valency was widened by 3 meters and lowered by 2

The bridge’s arch was increased in height
Converging rivers and sea breeze
-two rivers meet near Bostcastle bringing lots of water
-rain causes by converging sea breeze
