Hungarian land was redistributed to other Cominform countries
Hungarian supplies (coil, oil) were shipped to Russia (Hungary deprived)
Russian official controlled government and did not allow other parties
Cominform executed many Hungarian politicians and leaders
When did stalin die and what happend next?
- Khrushchev introduced destalinisation in 1956 in the secret speech where is promised an end to Stalinism everywhere
Who replaced Rakosi and what was he like? (1953-55)
Imre Nagy, he was a fighting man and cared for the peasants
Why was Nagy thrown out of government and replaced again by Rakosi? (1956)
He opposed Rakosi’s harsh tactics
Why was hungry dissatisfied and rioting over the soviet rule? (1950’s)
The soviets were taking there supplies for themselves and imprisoning many of there people with there reforms
What did Khrushchev do to calm the situation in 1956?
He agreed to make Nagy the Prime Minister and he withdrew the Red Army from Hungary
What reforms did Nagy instantly make?
Hungary leaving the Warsaw pact and holding free elections (hoping to gain western support)
What did the USA do to promote capitalism in the east? 1950’s
Propaganda on radio shows and sent aid to the countries, promised military and never gave it
What was the Hungarian response to Nagys reforms? 1956
Much support however created a split government. Janos Kadar set up a USSR supporting government in Eastern Hungary
How did Khrushchev respond to Nagy’s reforms? (1956)
200,000 soviet troops and 1000 tanks entered Hungary supporting the communist government run by Kadar. They fought supporters of Nagy in Budapest for two weeks, eventually defeating Nagy. The revolution was over
Why did Khrushchev respond so violently to Nagy’s reforms?
He felt that if he gave Hungary more freedom, other countries soon would try and follow which would lead to the USSR’s downfall
Why was Nagy hung/executed? 1958
As a lesson to the other socialist leaders in the USSR’s sphere of influence
How did the west (USA) react to Hungary’s downfall?
Gave supplies and aid, allowed refugees into America and Eisenhower praised them
What happened in Eastern Europe after the Hungarian slaughter?
Much unrest, many people fled the nations and Sweden, Netherlands and Spain boycotted the Olympics in protest
