What happened at the Teheran conference (1943)

A

Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt
Stalin distrusted the other two in there promise to intervene in their nazi battle
The USA and UK agreed to intervene a second front to help the USSR
The USSR agreed to declare war on japan after Germany was defeated
Roosevelt and stalin disagreed with Churchill (wanted to declare war on the Balkans- stop soviet advancement)

What happened at the yalta conference (1945)

A

Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt
It was agreed that Germany will be reduced in size, demilitarised and pay reparations when defeated
Plans were begun for how Germany would be divided
The UN was set up to replace the League of Nations
Poland should be in soviets influence sphere but run democratically
Largely a success but tensions rose (mainly to do with Poland)

Failures of the Potsdam conference (1945)

A

Disagreed on Germany’s reparations- USSR wanted heavy, USA wanted light for Germany to rebuild
Stalin wanted more/better land as his was generally poorer
Truman used his atomic bomb as power to control discussion
Stalin broke his word about setting up a communist/capitalist government in Poland
Disagreement about the Greek government

What was the Truman doctrine? (1947)

A

America sent in economic resources and troops into struggling European country’s (Greece and Turkey) to strengthen them against the USSR and to temped the people away from the appealing communism.

A

For one of the first times, America were getting involved in other international affairs and ‘protecting the world’.

A

13 billion dollars given to European governments to rebuild.
The enhancement of trade with Europe and America
Stalin was not happy with the USA’s alliance building

A

The Baltic States, East Germany, Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, Romania,
Czechoslovakia
All were taken quite forcefully using intimidation tactics in free elections (if that failed they took it by force - Czechoslovakia)

A

The communist Information Bureau
Represented European communist parties and brought them under the USSR’s ‘guidance’
(Rejected the Marshall plan)

A

The USSR’s response to NATO.

An official military alliance between the USSR and Eastern Europe

A

1945- USA create the first nuclear bomb
1949- USSR had caught up
Americans created a hydrogen bomb
1953- both countries have hydrogen bombs (USA’s more powerful)
1955- USSR caught up and created ‘Sakharov’s third idea’
Both created airplanes and launchers
1960s- USA still winning but concerned over USSR’s boasting (mainly false boasting)
