What was the outer space treaty? (1967)
Pledged no nuclear weapons would be placed in outer space by either superpowers
What was detente?
The USSR and USA trying to ease there tensions mutually in the search for peace
What was the nuclear non-proliferation treaty? (1968)
Neither superpower would aid or supply other countries with nuclear weapons to stop conflicts happening elsewhere
When was the high point of detente? And why?
The mid 1970’s. Multiple statements had been announced with new understanding between the superpowers
What was SALT 1? (1972)
Strategic arms limitation treaty
No more production of short range missiles
Only two anti ballistic missiles each (shoots down missiles)
Weapon carrying Submarines could only be used when there existing stock of short range missiles became obsolete
What was SALT 2 and why was it difficult? (1972)
A more comprehensive SALT 1
It was difficult because: the west Germans were worried they would be left undefended
Right wing Americans thought detente had gone too far
What difference did SALT 2 have than SALT 1?
Both sides agreed to reduce nuclear war heads to 2250

A joint spade mission between the USSR and USA
What was the Helsinki agreements? (1975)
Representatives from all over Europe and Canada USSR and USA came to discuss security, co-operation and human rights
What was agreed upon about security at the Helsinki agreement (1975)
All countries boundaries were accepted
All disputes were to be settled peacefully (through the UN if necessary)
No country would interfere in international affairs with another
Countries would inform each other of big military moves and allow impartial representatives to observe

Economic cooperation (even USA and USSR) Industrial cooperation through same standards and joint projects Scientific cooperation through sharing information and research Educational cooperation (learning languages, student exchanges)
