  • Food shortages and bad harvest
  • Protest - took down Stalin statue
  • Nagy was sent to be PM of Hungary
  • He allowed other political parties
  • He wanted to leave Warsaw Pact - this threatened the buffer zone - other countries would follow - so no USSR influence

  • Soviet invaded Hungary (Nov 1956)
  • 2500 Hungarians + 700 soldiers died - justified as protestors killed communist
  • Nagy executed 1958
  • Kadar replaced Nagy
  • 15 point programme - tighten communist control
  • Made West look weak due to not intervening
