- He wanted to leave Warsaw Pact - this threatened the buffer zone - other countries would follow - so no USSR influence

A
- Soviet invaded Hungary (Nov 1956)
- 2500 Hungarians + 700 soldiers died - justified as protestors killed communist
- Nagy executed 1958
- Kadar replaced Nagy
- 15 point programme - tighten communist control
- Made West look weak due to not intervening
