Rakosi’s rule
Rakosi was assigned by the soviets to rule Hungary
He imprisoned any political opponents to keep power
He failed to industrialise Hungary, causing a drop in living standards
He refused marshall aid
Causes of revolution
Soviet rule since end of war
The communist party unpopular but Rakosi was removing rivals
1947 election rigged
1949 election, no opposition
People were poor but were fed propaganda saying that the economy was good
People were fustrated
The uprising
People protested in Budapest
Secret police opened fire on protesters
Nagy gains power and Khrushchev lets him, but he makes anti-communist changes(leaves warsaw pact)
Khrushchev sends troops to take Budapest back
Imre Nagy’s reforms
Released political prisoners
Allowed opposition parties
Left the Warsaw pact which was the final straw for the Soviets
Effects on Hungary
20,000 dead
People in fear (no more protests)
200,000 fled
Effects on the USSR
It influence protests in other satellite states, however showed what would happen to protesters and re-established fear of the Soviets in Eastern Europe
Effects on superpower relations
Showed the west wouldn’t support Eastern European uprisings
Soured relations and proved peaceful coexistance was a sham
