The end of soviet control in Eastern Europe
1989- year of miracles- revolutions all over eastern Europe
Poland
June 1989- Polish ‘solidarity group wins first free election in eastern europe.
East Germany
September 1989: Many civillians leave for the West by travelling through Hungary to Austria.
October 1989: Gorbachev doesn’t help EGerman government deal with protests.
November 1989: West Berlin border opened early and Berliners cross the wall. Germany reunited in 1990.
Hungary
May 1989: Government takes down fence on Austrian border and promises democratic elections in October.
Fall of Berlin Wall
9th November 1989: mistaken announcement from EGerman press secretary caused people to flock to wall and border opened early. Thousands went to dismantle the wall, symbolically important of the end of the East-West divide.
End of the Warsaw pact
1991: after the collapse of the communist Government there was no more need for the Warsaw pact.
Baltic States
1990- Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia declared independance from the soviet union.
Gorbachev coup
August 1991- communist hardliners stage coup against Gorbachev which was defeated by a group led by Boris Yeltsin. Gorbachev continued in government but authority damaged. Other soviet republics took advantage of Gorbachev’s weakness and 12 formed a common wealth of independant states.
Break up of Soviet Union
25th December 1991- Gorbachev announces break up of the Soviet Union and resigns.
