Cuban revolution

A

Castro’s revolution succeeded and overthrew Batista in January 1959. This concerened the US as there were many American businesses in cuba. Theses were taken over by the revolution.

Bay of Pigs

A

The CIA proposed to Kennedy that Cuban exiles from the revolution would be trained to invade Cuba with US air support. Kennedy wanted to cover up any US involvement so less support was given. (April 1961) The invaders were outnumbered and it was a disaster.

Consequences of the bay of pigs

A

Castro announces he’s communist and creates relations with USSR. USA embarrassed. Castro allowed soviet weapons to be kept in Cuba (only 90 miles from Florida USA).

Cuban Missile Crisis

A

(October 1962)US finds soviet missiles in cuba and Kennedy calls for a naval blockade. Soviet ships reach blockade and turn around. Kennedy and Khrushchev agree after 11 days that weapons will be removed from Cuba and US wouldn’t invade it and would remove missiles from Turkey. (The whole crisis was 13 days)
