Who was Matyas Rakosi?
He was a leader of Hungary that the Soviet Union appointed, he was a very harsh leader.
What did Matyas Rakoshi do that was so horrible?
He had a secret police called the AVO that carried out a terror campaign on opposing government policy.
What happened in the summer of 1956
Citizens took to the streets protesting peacefully in the streets of Budapest, they were protesting against the government.
What made the protestors change their methods of protesting?
They heard that people in Poland had more freedom. They believed that maybe they would get more freedom but their protest became violent.
What did the government officials in Hungary do?
After a week of rioting the government officials had to flee Budapest.
What did the Communist officials that stayed do?
The remaining Communist Officials were better than Rakosi so Imre Nagy was chosen to be the new Prime Minister of Hungary
What did Nagy do as Prime Minister?
Nagy said that he would do what the Hungarian people asked for.
How did Khrushchev react to Nagy being Prime Minister?
Khrushchev was actually ok with Nagy being Prime Minister.
What did Nagy do that was too far for Khrushchev?
He declared that Hungary was pulling out of the Warsaw Pact.
What did Khrushchev worry would happen due to Nagy doing this?
He was afraid that other countries would rebel and the Warsaw Pact would be completely broken.
What did Khrushchev do to stop Nagy?
He sent in 200000 soviet troops and 2500 tanks into Hungary
What was Khrushchevs aim / what did he want to achieve by doing this?
He wanted to remove Nagy from power and restore order to Hungary again.
What did the Hungarians do in response?
They fought against the Soviets but they were out gunned and out skilled.
What did Nagy do during the battle?
He called for help from the UN but the USA didn’t help them.
How did the fight end?
Over 2000 Soviets were killed along with 4000 Hungarians. Around 200000 Hungarians fled. 35000 Hungarians were arrested and 300 were executed.
