Hungarian revolution
The Hungarian Revolution of 1956 was a nationwide revolt against the government of the Hungarian People’s Republic and its Soviet-imposed policies, lasting from 23 October until 10 November 1956. They wanted to withdraw from the Warsaw Pact.
Causes
Began as a student demonstration which attracted thousands.
Fired upon by state security police.
Student died and was raised above crowd wrapped in a flag.
Matyas Rakosi was a cruel leader, imprisoning 387,000 people, killing 2000.
How did it end?
4 November, Soviet forces invaded.
The Hungarian resistance continued until 10 November.
2,500 Hungarians and 700 Soviet troops were killed
200,000 Hungarians fled as refugees.
By January 1957, the new Soviet-installed government had suppressed all public opposition.
Consequences
Thousands of Hungarians arrested and imprisoned.
No other countrys tried to get rid of Russian troops until Czechoslovakia 1968.
Polarisation of the Cold War . many Communists left the Communist Party -
Western leaders became more determined to contain communism.
