Causes
The Kabul Revolution (April 1978) gave Brezhnev an opportunity to extend his power by invading Afghanistan in the oil-rich Middle East.
The Soviet Union feared the loss of its communist proxy in Afghanistan.
Consequences
The Carter Doctrine severely increased tensions between USA/USSR
• Led to the ‘Second Cold War’ and Reagan’s ‘Evil Empire’ Speech.
• War lasts 10 years and 1.5 million are killed including 15,000 Russian soldiers.
Who fought against the Soviets?
Insurgent groups known as the mujahideen fought a guerilla war against the Soviet Army.
What happened?
The Soviet Union sent thousands of troops into Afghanistan and immediately assumed complete military and political control of Kabul and large portions of the country.
