Humanistic approach
An approach to understand behaviour that emphasises the importance of subjective experience and each person’s capacity for self-determinism
Free will
The notion that humans can make choices and are not determined by biological or external factors
Self-actualization
MASLOW- The desire to grow psychologically and fulfill one’s own potential- becoming what you are capable of
Hierarchy of needs
MASLOW- A 5-leveled hierarchal sequence in which basic needs must be satisfied before higher psychological needs can be achieved
Self
Ideas and values that characterize ‘I’ and ‘me’. Includes perception and the value of ‘what I am and ‘What I can do’- self-concept and self-image
Congruence
If there is a similarity between a person’s self-image and ideal self, the congruence exists
Conditions of worth
Conditions imposed on an individuals behaviour and development, that are considered necessary to earn positive regard from significant others
Unconditional positive regard
When humans receive love, praise, and acceptance freely, without any conditions. Leads to healthy sense of self-worth
Assumptions
- Based on free will- Holism
- Focuses on an individual’s whole experience
- Reject scientific methods like experiments as individual is unique- idiographic
