humanistic approach Flashcards
limitation of humanistic approaches unscientific methods
- for example, self actualisation is an abstract idea which would be difficult to test under experimental conditions. Therefore the research lacks empirical evidence to support its claims and cannot be falsified
limitation of humanistic approach lack of relevance outside of individualistic cultures
- many studies have confirmed that individualistic cultures such as US focus more on personal identity wheras collectivist cultures like china that define self concept more in terms of social relationships.
therefore humanistic approach is culturally relative and its a product of the cultural context it was developed in
a strength of humanistic approach is real world application (a01 aswell)
roger claimed that an individuals problems were a direct result of their conditions of worth and the conditional positive regard they recieve from other people
rogers client centered therapy is an important form of modern day psycho therapy which aims to increase a persons feelings of self worth and reduce incongruence.
HOWEVER, in some instances therapy wont be enough therefore drug therapy may have to be used instead or combined
supporting evidence of effectiveness of counselling psychology
a meta analysis of 90 studies showed humanistic therapys prompted significant improvement in clients when compared to patients not recieving treatment. However rogers promoted non experimental methods which make it impossible to verify the results of counselling without experimental evidence
humanistic approach key assumptions
- emphasises the importance of subjective experiences, feelings and thoughts
- reject scientific models and is refered to as a person centered approach
- humans are self determinising and have free will. they are active agents who determine their own developments
self actualisation
the desire to grow and fill ones potential
a creative person, accepting of other people and an accurate percepction of the world around us
not everyone will manage this due to important physiological barriers that prevent some reaching full potential
personal growth
developing and changing as a person to become fulfilled, satisfied and goal orientated
self concept as a condition of personal growth
how we percive ourselves as a person.
-self image: how we see ourselves
- ideal self: person who you would like to be (dynamic)
congruence as a condition of personal growth
when a persons ideal self is in line with their actual self image. All people experience a certain level of incongruence. It acts as a barrier to personal growth and can explain symtpoms of depression
conditions of worth as a condition of personal growth
requirements we must meet for other people to accept us as worthy of their love. A result of recieving conditional positive regard from others
We internalise the conditions of worth imposed on us and live our lives according to these conditions
