humanistic approach Flashcards
not reductionist
holism- subjective exp that can only be understood by considering the whole person. has more external validity; considers meaningful behaviours with real context
limited application
little impact within discipline of psych. humanistic lacks sound evidence base+ is a loose set of abstract concepts rather than comprehensive
positive approach
‘brings person back to psych’ offers refreshing/optimistic alternative to psychodynamic (sees humans as slaves to their past). this sees all humans as good and having ability to self actualise
untestable concepts
vague/abstract ideas are hard to test. SA and congruence= hard ti test under exp conditions. Rodgers- improve scientific rigour of his work by Q sort (objective measure of progress) therefore there is a lack of empirical evidence
cultural bias
individual freedom, autonomy and personal growth= western world. collectivist cultures (eastern) emphasise the needs of the group/community; may not identify with this approach. therefore it is a product of cultural concept
