biological approach Flashcards

1
Q

scientific methods

A

FMRI+EEG used for genetic and biological basis of behaviour. advances in techno; measure physiological and neural processes without bias. therefore it is based on objective +reliable data

Q

biological determinism

A

sees human behaviour determined by internal and genetic causes. however in reality, genotype is influenced by phenotype. a purely genetic explanation becomes problematic when we consider criminality (crime gene?) therefore it is too simple and ignores environmental factors

Q

real world application

A

increased understanding of neurochemical processes is associated with psychoactive drugs; anti-depressants that increase serotonin levels. this decreases hospital admissions as people can manage their symptoms at home.

Q

cannot separate nature and nurture

A

assumes that similarities are due to similar genes. similar environments are confounding variables here. explains why DZ twins have higher conc rates than normal siblings even though 50% are same genes= share more environmental exp

Q

natural selection

A

critics of darwin; karl popper claim that it is not possible to prove/falsify the evolutionary theory as we cannot see it and can only infer. however, others claim that basic principles are supported by fossils
