humanistic Flashcards
Main assumptions of the humanistic approach
Behaviour emphasises the importance of subjective experiences and each person’s capacity for self determination
Role of free will
The humanistic approach is non deterministic and actually believes that everybody is an active agent
What is Maslow’s hierarchy of needs
The hierarchy is a summary of needs that all humans have and to progress up it, the needs below must be met first. There is an innate need to reach self actualisation.
Self actualisation is
The fulfillment of our true potential which drives and motivated us
Examples of all 5 hierarchy of needs
1.physiological needs (breathing,food)
2.safety and security
(Health, employment)
3.love and belonging (family,friendship)
4.self-esteem (confidence,achievement)
5.self actualisation (morality,creativity)
Why may we not reach self actualisation
If you are incogrent
What does being incongruent mean
Congruence-small gap between self image and ideal self
Incongruence-large gap between self image and ideal self
What causes incongruence
Conditions of worth from parents (I’ll only love you if…)
How do you become congruent
Using Maslow’s client centred therapy
-unconditional positive regard
-build a sense of self
-change unrealistic ideal self
AO3 pos
Real world applications
-Client centred therapy (counselling) helps conditions like anxiety and low self worth
-educate (incongruence)
-treated (unconditional pos regard)
-improve QoL
-usefulness
AO3 neg
-Not all concepts can be measured
-Self actualisation and congruence are vague and untestable
-Little empirical research carried out so other approaches may have more valuable data
-Reduces the internal validity
