Biological Approach Flashcards
Biological approach is
The emphasis of physical processes in the body such as genetics and neural function
Main assumptions
Everything psychological is at first biological
The mind lives in the brain
Heritability
The amount of variance within a trait eg. The more a trait is influenced by genetics, the greater it’s heritability
Identical and non identical twins
Monozygotic and dizygotic
What do twin studies look at
Concordance rates (The % of which twins will have the same traits and characteristics)
Concordance rates for MZ twins w OCD
68%
What’s a genotype
The particular set of genes that a person possesses
What’s a phenotype
The observable characteristics of an individual which are the consequences of the interactions of the genotype with the environment
How do we use adoption studies with concordance rates
By comparing the traits of the adopted child with that of the biological parent
OCD concordance adoption
Lewis
Patients w OCD found 37% of their parents had OCD meaning that there is a genetic vulnerability for the next generation to have OCD
Bio approach pos
Real world applications
Low serotonin causing OCD
Educate treat (ISSRI’s) improve QoL
Usefull theory
Bio approach neg
Twin concordance rates - environmental assumption
-assume that MZ and DZ are raised the same and share the same environment so are comparable however DZ are treated separately.
-concordance rates aren’t comparable and the difference between MZ and DZ may be exaggerated bc MZ may start acting similarly so have a higher concordance rate despite genetics
-reduces validity of concordance rates
