HUMANISM Flashcards
Who came up with the hierarchy of needs
Maslow
what is the main assumption of humanism
All humans are unique and shouldn’t be seen in one way. it emphasises looking at a whole person, and how they behave
What are the steps of the hierarchy of needs
physical needs
safety/ security
love + belonging
self esteem
self actualisation
Can you skip any stages of the heirachy of needs
No, but you are able to go backwards and therefore further away from your full potential.
Who came up with the idea of congruence
Rogers
what is the real self
the person you truly are
what is the ideal self
the person who you aspire to be
what happens when the real self and ideal self are too different
can cause incongruence and can’t self actualise
what leads to incongruence
conditions of worth and lack of unconditional love
how to remove conditions of worth
unconditional positive regard helps to remove conditions of worth which happens through person centred therapy
What does the approach being holistic mean
it takes into account all aspects of each person and recognises everyone as unique
why does the approach being holistic make it more consistent
it makes it more personal and focused on the individual
the treatments will be more personalised - so they will most likely be more effective than treatments from other approaches
