Human reproductive organs Flashcards

1
Q

What are the seminal vesicles part of, what do they provide and what do they do to the duct system?

Q

Where is the prostate gland, what runs through the prostate, what does it result in, and what other function does it have?

A

The prostate gland is a gland that is located between the penis and bladder. The urethra runs through the center of the prostate, letting the urine flow out. It also secretes fluid that nourishes and protects the sperm.

Q

What is the bladder’s form, where is it, what kind of organ is it, what 2 things does it do?

A

The bladder is a muscular sac in the pelvis, and is a hollow organ in the urinary system. It temporarily stores urine, and the walls contract to empty urine through the urethra.

Q

What is the urethra, what does it do, what system is it part of and why?

A

The urethra is a tube which carries the sperm, semen, to outside of the body, through the genitalia. The organ is also part of the urinary system, because it also is the passageway for urine.

Q

Where is the epididymis, what do they transport, what system is it part of and why?

A

Alongside the testicles are the epididymis, and the vas deferens, which transport sperm to outside of the body, through the genitalia. The organ is also part of the urinary system, because it also is the passageway through which urine passes.

Q

What shape is the vas deferens, where does it travel, what does it transport?

A

The vas deferens is a long, muscular tube, that travels from the epididymis into the pelvic cavity, to just behind the bladder. The vas deferens transports mature sperm to the urethra in preparation for ejaculation.

Q

What is the penis made up of, describe the parts, what is the inside of the penis made of, what can it do, and what is the penis?

A

The penis is made up of two parts- the shaft and glans. The shaft is the main part, and the glans is the tip. At the end of the glans is a small slit, which is where semen and pee exit the body through the urethra. The inside of the penis is made of a spongy tissue, that can expand and contract. It is the external male sex organ.

Q

What does the scrotum look like, what does it help with, and what tells it to do this?

A

The scrotum has a pouch like structure, is a bag of skin that helps regulate the temperature of testicles and changes size maintaining the right temperature. The brain and nervous system give the scrotum cue to change size.

Q

Which system are the testicles part of and why, what do they produce, why is this important, where are they?

A

The testicles are part of the endocrine system because they make hormones, including testosterone. It is a major part of guys’ puberty, as they make their way through puberty, the testicles produce more testosterone, the hormone causes development of deep voices, bigger muscles, body and facial hair. They hang in the scrotum-

Q

What are labia, what do they function as, what do they surround?

A

Q

What is the uterus shaped like, what is inside of it, what is special about it, what can it do for a fetus and then baby, how long and wide is it usually, and what does a fertilized egg do with the uterus?

A

The uterus is shaped like an upside down pear, with a thick lining and muscular walls. The uterus has some of the strongest muscles in the female body, they are able to expand and contract to accommodate a growing fetus, and then help push out the baby during labour. Normally the uterus is about 7.5 cm long and 5 wide. A fertilized egg implants itself on the lining of the uterus.

Q

Where are the fallopian tubes, what do they connect to what, what is there within what, how wide is it, what is at the end of each fallopian tube, what does it do, where does the egg from an ovary go, what helps push the egg down what?

A

The fallopian tubes are at the upper corners of the uterus, they connect the uterus to the ovaries. Within each tube is a passageway no wider than a sewing needle, and at the end of each fallopian tube is a fringed area that looks like a funnel. This fringed area wraps around the ovary, but doesn’t completely attach to it. When an egg pops out of an ovary, it enters the fallopian tube. Once the egg is in the fallopian tube, tiny hairs in the tube’s lining help push it down the narrow passageway, toward the uterus.

Q

What system are the ovaries part of and why, what shape do they have, where are they, and what do they make?

A

The ovaries are part of the endocrine system, because they produce female sex hormones such as estrogen and progesterone, they are two oval shaped organs that lie on the upper right and left of the uterus. They produce, store, and release eggs into the fallopian tubes during ovulation.

Q

What does the hymen look like, what does it cover, are they all the same, what about after their first intercourse, and what may happen, and can it stretch beforehand?

A

The hymen is a very thin piece of skin-like tissue that partly covers the opening of the vagina. Hymens are often different from female to female. Most women find their hymens have stretched or torn after their first sexual experience, and the hymen may bleed a little. Some women who have had sex don’t have much of a change in their hymens, some women’s hymens have already stretched before they have sex.

18
Q

What does the cervix connect, what does it have, how large is the opening of the cervix (which is why a tampon..?), and what can happen to it during childbirth?

A

The vagina connects with the uterus, or womb, at the cervix (which means neck). The cervix has strong, thick walls. The opening of the cervix is very small (no wider than a straw), which is why a tampon can never get lost inside a girl’s body. During childbirth, the cervix can expand to allow a baby to pass.
